What is Health Coaching?

Health Coaching is a collaborative, client-centered process designed to help you improve your health and well-being. Tried-and-true techniques like goal-setting, behavior change, and accountability are used to help you make lasting changes in your overall wellness.   • Working with a Health Coach is personalized, so what you focus on depends on your goals and lifestyle. Clients often seek Health Coaching in areas like:

    • Nutrition & eating habits

    • Physical activity

    • Chronic conditions (such as diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking, often in collaboration with your doctor)

    • Building healthy habits

  • Anyone can benefit from seeing a Health Coach! But Health Coaches are especially helpful for people in the following situations:

    • Struggling with lifestyle changes, especially if you have trouble staying consistent

    • Managing a chronic condition (such as diabetes, heart disease, hypertension)

    • Feeling overwhelmed or unmotivated, which can make you feel “stuck,” unable to progress with your health goals

    • Preventive health, even if you’re already generally healthy, to optimize your well-being

    • Post-recovery support (such as following an illness, injury, surgery, or burnout)

    • Support to stay on track with your health routines during life transitions (i.e., new job, becoming a parent, retirement)

  • In our sessions together, you will never be forced to share or talk about anything you don't want to. There are times when exploring your history with your habits and discussing the relationships in your life can be helpful for us. However, the extent you wish to share will always be up to you.

  • Ethically, I am bound to keep everything we discuss confidential for all clients 18 years and older (except for a few rare legal exceptions that we will discuss in our first session). This includes revealing whether or not I have seen a client for an appointment.  For clients under the age of 18, I recommend that clients communicate directly with their guardians about the content of our sessions.

  • The number of times we meet together is completely up to you. Because every client has different needs, I do not promote "packages" of sessions. The majority of my clients come 1x/week for 3-4 weeks. During this time, the client and I will discuss their homework, as they are testing out the behavior skills we have discussed. When the client comes each week, we discuss what went well, and what we need to tweak in their program. After these first few sessions, some clients will come once/month, or just as needed to check in and to make any adjustments or additions to the program we have designed together.

  • The initial Intake session will last one hour. After this first session, our sessions may last between 30-60 minutes, depending on what the client feels he/she needs to discuss that day.

Health Coaching is NOT:

  • Therapy or counseling

  • A workout session

  • A diet plan

  • An exercise prescription

  • A lecture on what you should be doing to be healthy

  • Punishment or judgement for what you haven’t done

  • A “to-do list” of what you need to start doing

Health Coaching IS:

  • A collaborative process, guided by the client’s immediate needs and goals

  • Respectful and nonjudgemental

  • Insightful and informative

  • Encouraging

  • A learning process

  • Discovering new ways to solve problems and challenges that have seemed impossible to overcome in the past
